Bed Bug Control With Alternative Methods

By Pixie Matthews

Homeowners and anyone running a business that requires beds, like a hotel, should be aware of effective bed bug control measures. The health and financial concerns that come with a bed bug infestation can be very serious.

Clothes, furniture and other items in a contaminated room may need to be destroyed, and anyone who is bitten by these insects can end up with painful and itchy bites that could result in scars for some people, as well as anemia if a person is continually bitten. The infestation could spread if the bed bugs are not discovered in time, so effective home pest control measures need to be taken.

The Most Reliable Method Of Elimination

One of the most reliable methods of eliminating bed bugs is through the use of a DDT spray. This is a spray that has been used for decades in the United States as a commercial pest control to kill cockroaches and fleas, and though it was not intended, it helped to practically wipe out all bed bug activity in the nation.

The use of this particular spray, however, has been deemed by many to be unsafe for the environment and over the past couple of decades its usage has been significantly reduced.

Infestations Have Increased

Alternative home pest control methods have been used to control cockroaches and fleas, yet unfortunately, these different approaches do not have any real effect on bed bugs. As a result, over the past few years, the cases of bed bug infestations in America and across the globe have skyrocketed.

With insect treatment through DDT spray no longer a viable option, bed bug control needs to occur through different means.

Neem Oil Repels Insects

One more traditional way of exercising more control over bed bugs is through a substance called neem oil, which is a type of organic insect repellent that comes from the neem tree in India.

The oil is made from the bark and leaves of the tree and its properties have been repelling insects for hundreds of years. Neem oil can be used to clear out an infestation by spraying it on the floors and the mattress of the bed. This particular oil is also used in the manufacturing of some mattresses.

Separating Bed Bugs From The Bed

Pest control companies are not always needed, as there is a cheaper method of bed bug control that provides effective results through isolation. This is a process of separating the bed bugs from the bed so they can be more effectively exterminated, thus allowing the person sleeping in the room to do so without worrying.

This process starts with the cleaning or destruction of the mattress and bed linen if necessary. Once the bed has been cleaned, the next step is to isolate it from the rest of the room.

Petroleum Jelly Spread On Bed Legs And Other Furniture Nearby

Because bed bugs have an aversion to petroleum jelly, this substance can be spread on and around bed legs to prevent the bugs from being able to climb up onto the bed.

Bed bugs have been known to use nearby furniture to climb up and then make the jump onto the bed, so everything nearby should be moved away to prevent this from happening. Once the bed is isolated, the bugs on the floor can be killed and at the very least, the spread of the infestation can be halted.

Your Family Can Sleep Safely

Bed bug control is about taking action and choosing the best method of dealing with each particular case. Studies have shown that bed bugs in more populated areas, like New York, that have been exposed to high amounts of insecticides are more likely to resist further sprays.

Alternative methods of pest control will likely be more successful in those types of situations and there are lots of insect pest supplies to choose from. No one wants to have bed bugs in their home or business, but there are steps that can be taken to eliminate the pests so you can feel safe while sleeping.

Little Known Bug Repellant Facts....

What is the difference between synthesized and natural bug repellants?
A synthesized bug repellant is where a commercial chemical or natural chemical is taken and transformed so that it lasts longer. This is usually done by adding in additional chemicals and substances.

These additions make the repellant last longer and cause it to cling to the skin far more readily than a natural substance. Natural bug repellants are just what they sound like…they are made from natural plants, oils or substances. These do not last as long on the skin or clothing but are thought to be far healthier for you than synthesized repellants.

If you think that the synthesized repellant is going to protect you better, you are wrong. Studies have shown that there are many natural repellants that are far more effective against bugs than their commercially synthesized cousins.
