Bird Care Garden Nursery Landscaping Guide
Bird Care And Meeting Nutritional Needs
By Rodger G Allenby
Getting a pet bird and giving it the proper bird care is not
simply a matter of picking a bird, buying it a cage and feeding
it some seeds. Different breeds require quite different types
of food, so acquiring a bird for a pet cannot be done casually.
Not only does the potential owner have to be sure they are choosing
the right pet bird for their family or circumstances, but they
also need to review their options to ensure that they know what
the bird needs, to keep it healthy. Some birds eat seeds, while
others might require nectar; learning details like this is part
of responsible pet ownership.
Buying Nectar From A Pet Shop
A lorikeet is one of those birds that require nectar as their
bird food, though they can also have a little bit of seed. A pet
store specializing in birds will provide nectar formulated for
this breed, either in a wet form or as a powder.
If you buy the powder, then it’s very important to place it close
to the bird’s water dish so it can drink frequently as it eats.
In addition, the bird needs either fresh fruit or canned fruit
that is unsweetened, as a regular addition to the diet. This is
one of the feeding details you absolutely need to know to give
proper bird care to a pet lorikeet.
Feeding A Cockatoo
A cockatoo, on the other hand, is one of those birds known as
an omnivore, meaning they eat almost any categories of food giving
them; however, you can’t just give them table scraps. The best
diet for these birds is to give them a large hookbill seed mix,
supplemented with sprouted seeds, fruits, and vegetables.
Acceptable fruits might be pears, apples, bananas and peaches,
while vegetables might include broccoli, carrots and lettuce.
In addition, their bird food might include occasional treats of
cottage cheese and bits of hard boiled eggs.
Feeding Your Bird And Keeping It Healthy
Most birds look like rather simple creatures, unless you’re dealing
with something like a parrot. But proper bird care is actually
not that simple. As well as getting the right pet bird cage and
seeing to the pet’s physical needs, you need to be sure you’re
giving it the food that will properly nourish it.
This will involve doing your research, to find out if your bird
eats seeds or nectar, and what other supplements it needs. To
have a healthy bird, be a cool cat and stay on top of all these
things.
