Birdfeeder To Invite Birds To Your Yard

By Rodger G Allenby

Birdfeeder in your yard is the way you can attract birds to fly in and stay around. There may be a variety of birds in your area and you want to invite them with bird feeders and bird baths. By observing the variety of birds in your local area, you may realise there are hummingbirds, songbirds, wild birds and others. You need to review your options and place different feeders in your yard to attract different birds.

For example, with hummingbirds you need a hummingbird feeder, as these birds like the sweet liquid found in a hummingbird feeder. Other birds like fruit like cherries, while others like bird seed. If you notice the birds are not eating from your bird feeder, see if you can identify the bird and find out what type of food it really likes. Sometimes, you can use trial and error. Most birds like bird seed, while hummingbirds ignore bird seed.

You need to be careful where you place each bird feeder as the bird seed may be eaten by squirrels, leaving little for the birds. You also need to ensure the bird feeders are placed in a safe location in your yard, to prevent predators attacking the birds.

Landscaping Your Backyard

Most people I know, put a lot of thought into the way they make their gardens look. They set up well landscaped, well tended plants, lay whimsical brick paths, add water fountains, and put in outdoor patio furniture, wooden benches, and porch swings.

There are a few things, however, that affect the quality of a garden that most people do not think about. One of the biggest ones, in my opinion, is birds. It is amazing how much a birdhouse or birdfeeder can affect your enjoyment of your garden.

Attract Birds To Your Yard With A Birdfeeder

Everyone knows that songbirds will flock to your garden if you have the right flowers, but bird feeders make it an even better draw. I don’t know how, but the word seems to spread among birds. Once they know that yours is the house with the bird seed, they won’t be able to stay away.

One of the biggest problems that people have with bird feeders is that they attract squirrels. Squirrels can compete with the birds for the same seeds, but unlike birds, squirrels can be chased away very easily. Within the last several years, however, squirrel proof bird feeders have become very popular.

Nowadays, you can get a bird feeder with thin openings for the seeds, a long, thin cord to hang from the tree, and other features that will really discourage unwanted animals from getting at the bird seed.

A Number Of Birdfeeders Can Supply A Variety Of Food

Most birds can be fed with one bird feeder, but there are more than a few species that require a different kind of food. Some birds, for example, only like to eat fruit. You can put up any birdfeeders you want, but they won’t come for the bait. Unless there are cherries to be had, they will stay far away.

Similarly, a hummingbird will only come to a hummingbird feeder. Hummingbirds, you see, love to eat pollen. Hummingbird feeders basically contain sugar water in flower-like openings that trick the birds.

Hummingbirds Sipping Nectar From A Hummingbird Feeder

Personally, I love hummingbird birdfeeders. Before we got one of them, the hummingbirds would only come by for about 20 seconds at a time. They would go up to a few specific flowers, then fly away as quickly as they could. With a humming bird feeder, however, they will stay all day just sipping nectar.

It really gives you a chance to get a closer look at these fascinating animals. They have quickly become some of my favorite creatures!

Window Bird Feeders

There are bird feeders you can place close to your window, to view the bird flying towards your window. These are window feeders. All you need is tinted glass windows and the birds will not feel threatened as they cannot see you. It is always fascinating to see the bird flying in all their glory, to feed on the food in the bird feeder. They are so close you can almost touch them.

If you have a problem with predators, like cats, in your yard then you need to place the bird feeders out of reach of predators, like high up on a tree, hanging from a long thin cord or in other difficult to reach locations around the yard. When the birds are feeding, they are especially vulnerable, so you need to place your birdfeeders away from predators.

You can purchase a bird feeder from your local pet shop or purchase online.
