Buildings Meeting Expectations
By James R Blunt
It is very important to choose the right contractor when you
are considering building your own home, as it is one of the most
important financial investments you will ever make, so you want
to get the home design and construction just right.
Planning ahead and choosing a design that suits both your present
and future needs is essential. Finding a builder of buildings
who can see your vision and work with you is the key to success.
Yet which builder is the right one for you?
Home Design Services
Home design services are provided by licensed building designers,
architects, licensed builders and engineers. Home and building
designers must be up to date with the latest legislation, newest
building trends, the environmental and energy impact of such things
as insulation, water usage, building materials and energy saving
systems like solar roofing panels for water heating and power.
They should also be able to guide you on the most appropriate
way to orientate your home on your lot, with regard to the sun
and prevailing winds. They should also be skilled at knowing how
best to use your buildings site topography.
Can They Meet Your Expectations?
During your first meeting with a design construction contractor,
you should take note as to whether they will be able to meet your
expectations regarding whether they are qualified to do the job.
So, make sure the construction company is licensed and ask if
the company will provide site inspections and elevation sketches
of the house in 3D to display what the house will look like when
built. As well, find out if there are easements or utility locations
that could affect the design. Also, make sure you have a signed
contract.
Make A List Of Potential Builders With A Good Reputation
Get an idea of a builder’s reputation. Once you have a list of
builders, you should do some research to discover the quality
of the work they provide. The best way to do that is to visit
a home or construction real estate site they have built and talk
with the homeowners. A reputable builder who has satisfied customers
should not have a problem with providing names and addresses of
recent customers.
Make sure to note the quality of the finishes inside the home
to include kitchen cabinets, paint and trim. Consider the quality
of the home construction, style of the design and construction
type as well.
Making Informed Decisions
Don’t hold back from asking questions. Your new home is a big
investment, so you want to be as heavily informed as possible.
Many reputable builders that specialize in individual designs
will have examples of their work for you to see. This allows you
to get an idea of their work without completely confining you
to the plans on display.
There may be additional costs if the buildings site is atypical;
such as a sloping or difficult lot. Most homes are quoted for
building on flat and stable surfaces with very little underground
rock.
If your site is steeply sloping, unstable or has rock beneath
the surface, then it may add considerably to the cost of building
a home. To help you build your dream home, consider hiring a professional
who know how to build.

Little Known Construction Facts....
What is the history of construction?
Mankind was not gifted immediately with the
ability to have housing. Early man had to figure out how to protect
himself and his family from the elements. Caves were the earliest
forms of protection but that had to evolve as mankind evolved.
Our ancestors needed to be able to travel
to find food sources so the ability to have a traveling dwelling
came about as a direct result of this need. Since
that time there has been remarkable advances in how buildings
and homes came together. As better equipment and tools were developed
the construction world and buildings developed.
A hundred years ago it was impossible for
man to build soaring skyscrapers but today it is a constant reality.
Technology will continue to improve on tools and designs and the
construction industry will have to keep up. Just imagine where
and what the next evolution in constructing homes and buildings
will take people. It could be colonizing a distant planet or the
moon.
