Care Pet Supplies Help To Keep Your Pet Healthy

By Rodger G Allenby

Ideally you will never have to purchase special health care pet supplies. However, most animals require some sort of health maintenance items during their lifetimes. For instance, German Shepherds often need special ear cleaning solution to prevent irritations and infections.

Long-haired cats will need hairball remedy treats to keep them from getting sick from constant grooming. Parrots will require cuttlebones to maintain their beak health. The best thing you can do is find a qualified veterinarian to help you with your pet shopping, but here are some other supplies to consider.

Dental Care For Your Pet

According to American Veterinary Medical Association, periodontal affects nearly 80% of U.S. pets before age 3. Dental care pet supplies are important because bacteria can grow in the mouth and infect the bloodstream to harm the pet’s heart, kidney, live and respiratory functioning.

When pet shopping, look for the Veterinary Oral Health Council seal of approval. Dogs can find dental relief through chew toys, while cats can maintain dental health by eating certain cat treats.

Being Careful With With Spot-On Drops

If you’re concerned about fleas, ticks and mosquitoes this year, then exercise caution when purchasing these health care pet supplies. According to the EPA, the number of reported incidents from spot-on flea and tick treatment drops have increased 53% from 2007-2008.

These "incidents" range from sickness and skin irritations to seizures and deaths. While they will not comment on any specific brands, the agency is currently investigating these claims. The ASPCA alleges that many of these reports are due to improper use of the cat or dog supplies. Consumers should be sure their treatment is for the right animal and that more than one treatment isn’t applied at the same time, for instance.

Treatment For Dog Skin Tumors

Pet meds are one rapidly developing area in health care pet supplies. Sometime next year, FDA-approved Palladia will be available to treat canine cutaneous cancer (which is responsible for 20% of dog skin tumors). Clinical trials show that the drug can shrink, destroy or stop growth of tumors in 60% of all dogs with the disease.

However, these drugs and cancer treatments will not come cheap. "You should be prepared to spend several thousand dollars," warns the nonprofit canine cancer awareness website www.fightcaninecancer.com.
