Countertops Custom Made For Your Kitchen
By Joel F Morningstar
Those who want their bathroom or kitchen countertops custom made
will often decide to use granite as their material, chosen for
beauty as well as durability. With a limitless number of colors
to choose from, from cool blues and greens, to warm browns or
dramatic blacks, there is something for every style of home decor.
Granite, one of the hardest types of stone in the world, will
handle normal household usage provided it is sealed and cleaned
properly. Choosing granite for their custom countertops is unlikely
to be a choice that will ever be regretted, whether building or
buying a new home, or renovating an existing one.
Pre-Cut Granite Blocks
Granite kitchen countertops and bathroom vanity tops can, of
course, come in a prefab form. That is, certain types of popular
granite blocks are pre-cut into standard sizes that only await
the final placing and cutting of holes for sinks and plumbing.
While these prefab counters are less expensive, they also preclude
many of the more exotic granite colors and patterns, and can’t
be used in non-standard kitchen or bathroom designs. Custom made
countertops, on the other hand, allows for a review of options
with a wider range of colors and shapes.
Taking Care With Installation
Cutting a granite slab is a precise science and the measurements
must be done with care to ensure the granite countertop installation
goes off without a hitch. After all, once the holes for sinks
and plumbing are cut into the stone, the cutting can’t be undone
if the measurements were wrong.
The width of the backsplash or the clearance for appliances will
also have to be taken into account. Additionally, for some kitchen
countertops, the original slab of stone may not be as long as
the counter requires, so there is likely to be one seam at least.
To have countertops custom made is a detailed and meticulous process,
since granite leaves little margin for error.
A Special Sealant Helps With Maintenance
Another area where care must be taken is maintenance. Cleaning
granite surfaces does not have to be hard, as long as a special
sealant is added when the countertops are installed, and then
refreshed yearly.
With the adding of the sealant as a final detail, the kitchen
and vanity counters should last for as long as the kitchen or
bathroom remains. Having countertops custom made might require
a lot of care and attention to detail during the process, but
it will be worth it as these durable, beautiful surfaces add to
the appeal and value of the home.

Little Known Remodeling Facts....
What do I need to do prior to ordering or looking at granite
countertops?
Before you even go start looking at granite
countertops you need to think about the overall project first.
Are you redesigning a kitchen or a bathroom? Do you want it to
be in a tile pattern or one solid piece? You also need to know
how many square feet of countertops you will be working with.
After you have your calculations firmly
in hand, then you can begin looking at ordering the granite. You
will have a wide selection to choose from and will also have a
wide variety of colors to look at. Just keep one thing in mind:
the more exotic the location the granite is mined from, the more
it is likely to cost you.
If you do some researching over the internet
then you will have a general idea about what the countertop is
going to cost you but do not forget to factor in labor and shipping
should you have to order online.
