The Cyclocross Challenge
By Leaf Treehorn
Even if you are a long term bike rider, you may not be familiar
with the cyclocross term, however, the chances are high that you
would recognize the style of riding. Bike riding, for the most
part, is a sport that anyone can participate in.
Cyclocross is different and requires a person to be in very good
shape. If you doubt this, go to a track and watch what the riders
have to withstand.
Short Rides Over Different Terrain
Cyclocross has been around in various forms for over a century.
It involves short rides over differing terrain and running with
the bicycle over a person's shoulder to proceed to the next course.
The time period can last anywhere from thirty minutes up to an
hour. This form of bike racing combines the varying terrain of
mountain biking with the speed and agility of road racing.
Course Includes Barriers Or Obstacles
The actual terrain of the course can include barriers or obstacles
arranged in a way that can prevent the rider from cycling completely
through the track. He or she must get off their bike, pick it
up and carry it over the barrier.
These barricades can be anything from a sand pit to a set of
stairs. This is where the aspect of road bike racing comes into
play. The cyclocross bicycles must be light enough in order to
be carried over the challenging ground.
Tires Are Like A Mountain Bike
The tires on a typical cyclocross bike resemble a mountain bike
in that the rubber is knobbed to help with traction in rocky or
steep terrain. The gears and brakes are similar to those found
on the mountain bike as well. It is the fine line between function
and speed that the rider must utilize if they want to win.
There are bike races in any division or category of biking. This
is no different. There are specifications and rules that have
to be abided by in order to qualify for the race. Some races require
that participants be members of an official recognized bike club.
The upside to this is that you will learn the rules and have
a support system in place. You will also come to discover that
you will need to stock up on some cold weather gear. Cyclocross
is primarily a fall and winter sport.
Get A Thorough Workout
If you find that you want to compete in the various races held
around the world, then you better get your thermal spandex out.
Cyclocross is a great way to get a thorough work-out.
People of all ages ride and if you can handle the bike, you can
ride the track. It may never win you a trophy, but you will still
take part in leading a healthy example for others wishing to indulge
this unique sport. Plus, you will be able to connect with nature
and have fun with your friends and fellow riders. That is a definite
plus.

Little Known Recreation Facts....
Is Mountain Biking actually a sport?
Mountain biking is considered a sport.
It is a great form of exercise and there are variations
of mountain biking within its frame work. Some mountain
bikers do cross-country racing while others journey out
into the dirt tracks to jump and traverse dirt mounds.
What type of gear do I need?
First and foremost you need a mountain bike
that suits your needs. It should be at a good height, have a sturdy
frame and have a good set of shocks. You should also take a look
at the tires to ensure that they have good tread for gripping
and a seat that is comfortable. Your rear will appreciate a quality
seat.
The next thing you need is protective gear in the form of elbow
pads, knee pads and a solid helmet. All bike riders eventually
take a tumble but cracking your skull on a rock in the middle
of the mountains can take the fun out of biking. You should also
make sure that your bike has an emergency repair kit, a water
bottle and a first aid kit for emergencies.
