Farming Feeds Everyone

By Pixie Matthews

It is really easy to forget that your meals come from more than the local grocery store. In our modern society, if you run out of an item you just make a quick drive up the road to get whatever you need. It may be a hamburger or it may be some tomatoes.

Many people in large cities, have never even seen farms or if they have, its just been a local farmers market or field. They don’t know the global scale that farming plays on food and agriculture. Farmers do not lead easy lives. Even if they run huge farms with plenty of farm hands, they still have to be involved in all of the day-to-day activities.

Farming Has Many Branches

Farming is its own complete world. It is an ecosystem unto itself. It is not just about putting seeds into the ground and hoping that they will grow. There are farm animals to raise, milk and meat to produce and various wool operations.

Thanks to agricultural research more progress is being made to help farmers have plants that do not require as many pesticides or animals that will grow larger and can produce more food or other products.

USDA Helps Local Farmers Survive

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a major hand in how farmers live and work. There are special grants set aside by the government that ensure that farmers will not go under if something were to happen to their crops. In the past, a failed crop could mean foreclosure on the farm and the farmer would have to give up his land.

These days, if something disastrous occurs, then the government steps in and helps the farmer out during the hard times. Does this make things easier? Yes, to an extent but there is still a lot of hard work to do on a farm that no amount of money can cover.

Come Spring, Summer And Fall

Farmers have full time jobs. Unlike many other industries, farmers have to be present during certain times of the year. They may get a break during the winter months but come spring, summer and fall, they are out working their fields and ensuring that a good crop will come in. Farming is not for everyone.

It is a family effort that requires a review their options, diligence and knowledge. But the end results are very rewarding. If you are able to look out onto a field of crops that you planted and have grown, then this is a measure of success that not many people experience.

Food and agriculture will always be a part of everyone’s lives. As a farmer, you are making a huge difference in the world.
