Farms Producing Food
By Pixie Matthews
If you pay attention to the stock market and the World Exchange
then you realize the importance that agriculture plays in the
world’s economy. Crops and food are valuable commodities that
are traded all across the world.
Farms are the backbone of that economy and are what drive money
from hand to hand. But without the local farmers producing their
valuable crops and products, the people of the world would quickly
become hungry. No longer would there be a quick drive to the grocery
store.
Visiting A Working Farm
If you have never visited a working farm, then you are missing
out on something great. It is remarkably easy to disassociate
food from farms when you buy it prepackaged in the grocery store.
But a trip to the country to see what life on the farm is like
and how the farming industry operates will give you a new appreciation
for the food that makes it to your table.
There is a lot of work that goes into farming. Farmers work from
dawn to dusk for many months of the year to tend to their plants
and animals. Awareness is definitely needed and once you visit
a farm, you will truly feel gratitude for your local small farmers.
Understanding The Farming Industry
Before you take that trip to a farm, whether it is a small local
farm or large, factory farming operation, you need to understand
the farming industry. There are huge farming operations all over
the world. In the United States these are mostly found in the
Mid-West where there is enough flat land to till and produce crops.
These are the operations that have contracts with major processing
plants. If you want to take a look at a smaller farm, then you
may want to consider a local organic farm. Once there, you will
become educated on the life of an organic farmer and you will
see the great innovations that keep organic produce and protein
products on the market shelves. Often, you can purchase goods
directly from the farmer. It is a great way to get the freshest
produce available.
Rural Communities Revolve Around Farms
If you grew up in the country surrounded by local farmers, then
you have a basic idea of what farming is like. Many rural communities
revolve around the farms that surround them. They tend to be tight
knit communities that work together to provide the folks living
in the surrounding areas with what they need in order to survive.
It is easy to not see that aspect if you have never been to the
country or seen a working farm. Just keep those thoughts in mind
the next time you make a quick grocery store run.

Little Known Farming Facts....
How has farming changed over the years?
Agriculture started out fairly simple. People
would find plants in the wild that were edible and then would
harvest the seeds so that they could plant and tend to the crops
themselves. This began to eliminate the "gatherer" and instead
brought the focus on to raising larger and larger fields of crops
to ensure that the family would have enough food for the winter.
With the domestication of sheep and cows the family was also guaranteed
meet.
They applied these learned techniques to
fibrous plants that could produce clothing. As time went on, science
began to step in and refine the process of domestication and reproduction.
Today’s farms are large scale operations that help feed people
all over the world. With more and more people living in cities
it is important for farmers to be able to produce in mass quantities.
Researchers have worked on genetic manipulation to increase the
crop’s or animal’s yields. You now have plants and animals that
are heartier and less likely to succumb to diseases.
