Flooring Slate Garden Nursery Landscaping Guide
Flooring Slate Inside Your Home
By Joel F Mornigstar
For several years, homeowners have realized how valuable stone
can be as a building and decorating material. From granite table
tops and window sills to countertops and hearthstones, they add
granite, slate or marble features into their homes.
All are beautiful, but even more important, they are durable.
Slate and granite are often used as roofing materials too, following
the example of some slate roofs that have lasted for hundreds
of years. And another trend in recent years has been the increasing
use of flooring slate.
The Production Of Slate
Slate is formed under extreme pressure, so the molecules of the
stone develop in parallel lines. This means both slate floor tile
and roofing slate tile products are easy to produce because the
rock splits readily into flat chunks.
Some slate fades very little, while other types have a higher
percentage of iron and calcium, and will therefore weather and
turn slightly brown over time. Unlike the wide range of granite
colors, slate is generally restricted to black, and shades of
green, brown and red.
Unpolished And Rough For Flagstones In A Garden
But that isn’t really a problem for slate flooring, since homeowners
don’t want their floors drawing all the attention, and are not
likely to want elaborate colors. Flooring slate, while it splits
naturally flat, can be further shaped so it looks quite different
in different contexts.
For example, it may be left unpolished and somewhat rough if
used for flagstones in a garden, whereas a slate tile wall, such
as one might find in bathrooms, may see the stone cut into uniform
shapes, the surface honed smooth, and the edges cut straight and
sharp to form tight joints. Slate flooring tiles, too, might be
cut and honed this way, or it may be left in various shapes that
are then put together to form a pattern.
Among many other advantages, another good thing about flooring
slate is its environmentally friendly nature. Being natural stone,
it doesn’t need to be replaced often, or need frequent repair.
Expecting A Long Life With Careful Maintenance
Homeowners can assume that roof and slate tile flooring will
have a long life expectancy if maintained as required. Being fire-resistant,
this stone will contribute to the security of the home, and potentially
reduce insurance costs while adding to the property value.
The material is clean and durable, and naturally beautiful. The
use of slate can be a wise choice both in the construction of
a new home or in the renovation of an existing one.

Little Known Remodeling Facts....
Are there suitable substitutions for granite countertops that
give the same appearance?
Believe it or not many people are turning
to concrete. No, they are not physically turning into concrete
statues. They are beginning to use concrete in place of tile or
granite countertops. Concrete is a much cheaper alternative and
can be used anywhere that tile or granite is used.
You can even have it stained and streaked
to match the natural colors found in granite. It is easy to care
for and in the event that you want to remodel your kitchen or
bathroom again later, it is easier to dispose of than granite.
You would be amazed at the difference in cost and how a well poured
concrete floor or countertop looks.
