Glass Mosaic With Glass Tiles
By Joel F Morningstar
Creating a unique and beautiful glass mosaic art piece from glass
tiles can be an easy and rewarding project. You may have already
tried to build a mosaic, but were discouraged by shrinking grout,
uneven grout lines or tiny pinholes of air bubbles.
These problems can be frustrating, but should not stand in the
way of you using your creative energy to construct and design
a mosaic pattern or template that is completely your own. How
can you remedy the problems that can crop up when putting together
a mosaic? Let’s take a look at a few tips that will allow
you to review your options and help to ensure a better experience.
Use Thick And Pasty Grout
Your grout should be thick and pasty; not runny. Be sure to wear
gloves and use your index finger to scoop up a bit of grout and
apply it into the imperfect area on your glass mosaic.
Fill in the pinholes that have opened and any little gaps that
you missed earlier, as well as any depressions that have formed
as the grout sets. All you need to do is fill in the imperfections
with your finger and then use a clean finger or a dry paper towel
to carefully wipe up any excess grout without disturbing the grout
line.
The Better Way To Fix Imperfections
If you don’t like the idea of having to re-grout between the
art mosaic tiles again, then here is a little trick you can use
at the end of the process. After you have completed the last wiping
cycle, and only when the grout has set for around forty-five minutes,
go back and carefully inspect your mosaic design for tiny pinholes,
any missed areas, depressed or shrunken grout lines and other
imperfections.
Just use the leftover grout, if it is still workable. If it is
not workable, then mix another small batch; around two tablespoons
of the grout powder are usually enough. Add a little water at
a time so you don’t end up with watery mixture.
The imperfections are fixed quite easily. Remember that you don’t
have to accept any imperfections at all. Just go back and fill
in the problems. Do not use your bare hands when working with
grout. After awhile, the skin on your fingers will wear away and
start to bleed. Always wear rubber gloves to protect your skin.
Taking Your Time And Paying Attention To Details
Don’t be discouraged if your artwork has a few problems. They
can be remedied. All you need to do is take your time and pay
attention to details to achieve the kind of quality results you
are proud to display in your home or in the garden, as glass garden
mosaics can also look stunning in a natural environment.
Next time you grout a glass mosaic, try these tips. You will
be pleased with the results you get, with no more grout line depressions,
pinholes or imperfections.

Little Known Mosaic Facts....
What do mosaics have to do with mathematics?
It is easy to think that creating a mosaic
is simply putting down random pieces of material to form the overall
picture but there is more to it than that. Some mosaics require
detailed mathematic equations to determine the size and shape
of each individual piece.
Mathematics is also used to help determine
the spacing and overall size that the finished mosaic will take.
You can think of it like an architect. Architects use mathematics
to determine the height, length and width that a building will
have. Then each piece is assembled and put into place. The same
thing happens with a mosaic.
