Growing Mushrooms Garden Nursery Landscaping Guide
Growing Mushrooms In Dark Spaces
By Suzzie T Franklin
Growing mushrooms inside your home is an option available to
many people, these days. You can purchase a mushroom growing kit
and grow your mushrooms to meet your cooking needs. You do not
need grow lights or place the mushrooms near a window as mushrooms
like the dark and hideaway places around your home. If you have
a cellar or a space in your garage, you can take advantage of
your facilities to grow mushrooms.
Alternatively, you can grow mushrooms outside in your yard, but
you do not need a yard with a garden space to grow mushrooms,
as you can grow mushrooms inside your home, in a garden shed or
in your garage.
Buying Your Mushroom Kit Online
You can find growing mushroom kits online or you may place a
request with your local garden nursery. I always buy my mushroom
kits online as they have been rather reliable and are easy to
grow in a dark corner of my home.
You do not need high levels of water and sunshine as demanded
by growing vegetable plants, as mushrooms belong to the fungi
family and therefore are different to vegetable plants. Following
the instructions on the mushroom kit, you should see your efforts
rewarded with growing mushrooms.
High Prices For Fresh Fruit And Veggies
When you go to the grocery for weekly shopping, the produce aisle
is bristling with an array of lovely vegetables and high prices.
An adequate amount of fruits and veggies are essential to good
health, so what can you do?
If you’re lucky enough to have a garden space, you can grow some
of these yourself, thereby getting very fresh and tasty produce
which also helps out on the food budget.
Growing Mushrooms In A Dark Corner
Few people think of growing one of the most popular produce items,
mushrooms. You don’t even need an outdoor garden. Mushrooms can
be grown in a dark corner of the garage, or even in a closet –
if such a prospect doesn’t offend your sensibilities.
Store purchased mushroom are quite expensive and you also have
the problem of storage. Even storing them in a paper bag, one
trick to making them last longer can result in a little waste
if you don’t use them promptly. Growing mushrooms solves the waste
problem and you have the pick of nice fresh mushrooms for today’s
meal.
Finding Mushroom Growing Kits Online
So how do you embark on growing mushrooms? Simple. Google ’growing
mushrooms’ and you’ll see what I mean. There are many websites
which sell mushroom growing kits, at very reasonable prices. What
you get is a special type of soil, infused with mushroom spores.
There’s really not much to it besides setting up your growing
site and waiting. Technically, mushrooms are not vegetables, they
are fungi, which explains why you don’t need direct sunlight.
Mushrooms thrive in dark places.
Adding Mushrooms To Your Favourite Meals
Mushrooms are tasty additions to just about any dish. Omelets,
pizzas, gravies, roasts, kebabs and salads are just a few of the
common ways we use mushrooms. By growing mushrooms yourself, you
can have the pick of the crop any day of the week. A very fresh
mushroom is far superior, being firm and free of bruises.
If you find you can’t use all of the mushrooms you’ve got in
your patch, you can just allow them to grow. As the mushrooms
get larger, they acquire a browner color and a more rustic appearance.
Guess what?
Use larger Mushrooms In Your Gravies And Roasts
These are the very same mushrooms known as Cremini, which you
see in the produce section at the store, which also carry a higher
price than the white mushrooms. The Creminis are good for stuffing,
in gravies and sliced for topping roasts.
If you really have a bumper crop, and you want to preserve those
white mushrooms, pick and slice them, lay them on a cookie sheet
and freeze. When frozen, pile them into a storage container. They’re
ready for use when you are.
Fresh Mushrooms Taste So Much Better
Frozen mushrooms maintain a good texture when thawed and are
especially useful for sauteeing, pizzas and slipping into a soup
pot or stew.
You can see the ease with which you can have fresh mushrooms
that beat the expense and storage problems by growing mushrooms
for your menus.
Growing Mushrooms In A Dark Space Inside Your Home
It may be cold and raining outside, but you can place your growing
mushroom inside and they will continue to grow. Some indoor plants
need to be near windows to receive some light, or need the assistance
of grow lights. You can place your mushrooms away from windows
and grow lights, in a dark space, and you will be rewarded with
plenty of mushrooms for your meals.
There may not be enough room for a garden in your yard, or you
may live in an apartment without a yard, but you may have an indoor
garden, to grow your herbs and other small plants to enhance your
cooking and create delicious meals.
There will be instructions in the kit on how to feed and care
for your mushrooms. As long as you follow those instructions you
will be rewarded with plenty of growing mushrooms.
