Growing Roses With Better Resources

If you’re growing roses, especially as a first time grower, then
probably one of your best resources is going to be rose societies.
You can find them in almost every major city as well as in many
countries around the world.
If there doesn’t happen to be a local rose society in your own
town though, you can certainly access the websites of many of
them to get advice and learn more about your beloved flowers.
Better Advice From A Local Rose Society
These organizations can be a great source of information about
how to grow your roses, but in fact the work they do, goes well
beyond just being that kind of resource.
These societies may initially have been established mainly as
groups to support and inform local people about how to grow roses
in general, but many of them have joined forces to serve partly
as regulators and developers of roses as well.
Creating A Database Of Roses
Now they do things like register names for new kinds of roses,
and they help to set standards for judging the growth and shape
of the flowers. The World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS)
is also working with its members to create a massive database
that will make information available to everyone in the world,
on everything from the different varieties, to how to take care
of roses, to rose conventions.
That’s another thing these societies do, which is to hold conventions
where their individual groups gather to share information about
roses. These conferences not only allow rose growing organizations
from all over the world to exchange information about growing
roses in their own countries, but they provide a forum for exhibiting
their local rose varieties too.
Resistance To Rose Diseases
Awards and honors are given to roses judged the most beautiful
or fragrant, and even to those that have been developed to be
resistant to certain rose diseases. The WFRS has also begun to
honor excellent new books about roses as well.
Development is another function of these societies, but that
doesn’t just mean creating new varieties of rose bushes or new
shapes and fragrances.
Sponsor Research And Register Local Varieties
These organizations often sponsor research into problems that
afflict rose plants, and many of the groups are now registering
the varieties in their local areas for the sake of preserving
and conserving types that might become endangered.
The organizations devoted to the rose are an invaluable resource
for learning about growing roses, but in fact they do so much
more than just provide information. In the long run, with their
research and conservation efforts, they may turn out to be vital
for the future of roses themselves.
