Healthy Dog Needs Plenty Of Exercise

By Rodger G Allenby

A healthy dog requires more than just food, water and a place to sleep. The three important things that a dog needs are exercise, discipline and affection, and in that order.

Most dog owners are aware of feeding their dog nutritious food, providing some discipline and giving affection, but many of them leave the exercising up to the dog. The owner who places exercise first on their list will not only have an easier dog to discipline, but they won’t be dealing with an overweight and lazy pooch either.

Exercise Is Not Playtime

So the first step towards a healthy canine is exercise, but that doesn’t mean playtime. Some owners will go outside in the backyard with their dog and toss the ball or a stick to them for ten or fifteen minutes.

This is great for playtime, but it’s not quite the same as exercise. Dogs won’t get as much energy burned off from this short period of activity, and in the long run a more focused session will provide healthier results. Dog exercise needs to be an extended period of time in order to work.

Take Your Dog For A Walk Twice A Day

The job of exercising your dog in order to have a healthy dog is up to you, the owner. This exercise isn’t about providing a huge backyard or even acres of land so the dog can run.

Most dogs may run for a brief period of time and then they’ll stop and wander around smelling new and different smells. The owner is responsible for either taking the dog for walks of at least thirty minutes twice a day, or taking the dog to a dog park to run and play with other balanced dogs, which will tire out your dog.

A Running Dog Is A Healthier Dog

The end result of a regular exercise program that is owner-led is a healthy pet. Dieting your dog is one way to deal with obesity and other weight problems, but exercise should not be forgotten.

Many dog health problems can be avoided by spending thirty to sixty minutes a day ensuring that your canine gets an adequate opportunity to run. Not only will their health improve, but they’ll also be happier.

Ensure Your Pet Receives Enough Exercise

A healthy dog can be compared to a healthy human, and the opposite is true as well. Think about how you would feel if all you did was sit around for the majority of the day, with only the occasional burst of energy.

Your health would suffer and the same is true for dogs. An owner who is responsible and cares about their pet will take the time to meet their dog’s needs and a major part of this is ensuring that they receive enough exercise.

Little Known Facts About Dogs....

Where is a good source to find healthy dog tips?
If you want the absolute best healthy dog tips you need to talk to your veterinarian. He or she is going to know exactly what your dog needs. Outside of a vet you can talk to other dog owners that have a dog the same breed as yours. They may have a solution to a problem or just some general advice to give you.

A third source is the internet. But you have to be careful when using internet advice. Not all forums and websites are going to give you the best tips. Some are on the internet solely to promote or sell their products. So the website may be telling you to buy X brand of dog food because it is the best when in reality it may not be.
