Healthy Dogs With Changed Eating Habits
By Rodger G Allenby
Healthy dogs are given enough exercise, provided with a healthy
diet, receive proper discipline and given lots of affection. If
your dog has all of these good things in its life, yet has symptoms
that something is wrong, then the first place to look is at the
dog’s diet.
A sudden change in your pet’s food can lead to possible diarrhea,
but this usually stops as the animal’s system becomes adjusted
to the new food. However, if symptoms continue, the dog may be
allergic to the food product.
A Suddenly Changed Diet
Healthy dogs who suddenly experience diarrhea, vomiting or skin
itching are most likely reacting to something they’ve eaten. If
their diet has been suddenly changed or they’ve been given dog
treats that are new to them, and the symptoms continue, then it
is likely a food related problem.
A food allergy is different than food intolerance. Intolerance
will quickly resolve itself either by you not giving that food
to your dog or making sure that other people don’t feed your dog
any treats.
Eating Food Results In Constant Suffering
A food allergy will often last longer and be a greater source
of aggravation. Having a healthy dog is not possible if the animal
is constantly suffering from what they are eating.
A food allergy usually results in itchiness, often around the
extremities. A dog’s ears are sensitive parts of their body and
so ear infections are common results of a food allergy as well.
Once the symptoms have been identified as coming from food allergies,
treatment can begin.
Find Out The Food Causing The Allergy
Treatment for an allergic dog does take time. The first step
is to review your options and identify which food is causing the
allergic reaction, and then eliminating that food from the diet.
This means taking a close look at the ingredients of the pet
food you buy, and then creating a diet that will still provide
essential dog food nutrition, but from different food sources.
A New Diet For 3 Months
So when choosing dog food brands that are different, try one
and introduce it for a minimum of 12 weeks. This means having
your dog eat their new diet for 3 months to see if any allergy
symptoms occur and if the current ones disappear.
Healthy dogs are easier to handle if something suddenly changes
in their habits, because it is easy to determine if it is food
related.
Read All Labels On Dog Food Products To Avoid Allergic Reaction
While it can take time to determine which food product is upsetting
your dog, a caring and responsible dog owner will be vigilant
and read all labels on dog products to avoid triggering either
food allergies or food intolerance, in order to maintain healthy
dogs.
It is important to especially check treats. Even though people
love to give their dogs treats, only give food that you know won’t
upset his or her system.

Little Known Facts About Dogs....
My vet says my dog is overweight. What healthy dog tips can
I use to help slim him down?
One of the most common topics when talking
about healthy dog tips is weight. Many people over feed their
dogs. A dog should be slim. You should be able to feel the dog’s
ribs and a curve where the stomach meets the hind quarters.
If your dog is overweight it can be just
as damaging to him as it would be for you. The best way to help
overcome the weight issue is a dual combination of increased exercise
and the right food.
If you have an older dog you may need to
switch to a special formula just for overweight and older dogs.
Another factor may be the amount you are feeding. Generally most
dog food brands will advise you on how much to feed and when to
feed based on the age of the dog.
If your dog is overweight you may need
to cut down the food a bit. Yes, your dog will act like he is
starving but if you are feeding him the proper amount he will
get over it. And one big piece of advice is this: do not feed
your dog table scraps.
