Home Lighting And Making Better Choices
By Joel F Morningstar
Most designers will agree that one of the most important aspects
of a truly wonderful interior design plan is the home lighting
chosen for the various rooms. The design for the lighting is a
crucial component that helps to set the stage and the mood for
any room. The lighting plan will not only create a mood and affect
a person’s disposition, but lighting can also be an important
factor in security and safety as well.
When people decide on what type of lights to use throughout their
abode, it is important to review their options and take into consideration
how each of the rooms will be used, as the fixtures will enhance
and sustain the types of activities that will be carried out and
give the kind of ambiance that is desired for each area.
The Overall Lighting Design Plan
This requires taking a careful look at all of the lighting fixtures
and lighting accessories that will be installed, and also the
types of additional table lamps and floor lamps that will be added
to the overall lighting design plan.
In order for a homeowner to get the kind of lighting effects
that they desire in various rooms of the home, the first thing
they must do is gain an overall understanding of the different
kinds of home lighting choices that are available.
Understanding Differences Between Various Type Of Lighting
The more a homeowner understands the differences between various
types of lighting, such as task lighting, ambient lighting, or
accent lighting, the better choices he or she will make and the
better the final result will be.
Ambient lighting, or general lighting, is the type of light that
can illuminate a whole room. It is often a great idea to also
install some type of dimmer device so that the homeowner can control
the amount of light; either brighter for specific tasks or more
subtle for entertainment and relaxation. Some of the most common
types of ambient lighting fixtures are recessed lights, sconces,
wall washers, track lighting, chandeliers, cove lighting, and
various types of surface mounted lights.
Task Lighting In Working Areas
The purpose of task lighting is to provide enough light for required
tasks that need to be done in a certain space, such as cooking,
reading, shaving, doing homework, or doing crafts or other such
activities.
Task lighting needs to be glare-free and it should be bright
enough to make it easy to see things without straining the eyes.
Typical types of task lighting are under cabinet lights, pendant
lights, valance lighting and various types of portable lighting
fixtures, such as desk lamps and floor lamps.
Accent And Ambient Lighting
Accent lighting is used to provide illumination to specific objects,
such as an item of sculpture, a work of art, plants or architectural
elements. In most instances, accent lighting is about three times
as bright as typical ambient lighting, although this can be different
depending on the desired effect. Sconces, track lighting, wall
washers and under-cabinet lights are some types of fixtures that
can be used for accent lighting.
Another aspect of home lighting that is important to consider
is the natural light that comes into a room through doorways,
skylights and windows. It is important to remember that the brightness
and intensity of natural light will vary a great deal based on
the time of year, the time of day and the weather. It is always
advisable to take natural light into account whenever you are
creating a lighting design plan.

Little Known Home Lighting Facts....
What is the history of lighting?
Lighting goes a long, long way back. Before
there were electric light bulbs, candles or even fire there was
the sun.
In the beginning of mankind that was the
only source of light that there truly was. Mankind
discovered fire and learned that they could function in the dark.
Not only did the fire create light but it also created heat.
Fire lead to the invention of torches and
candles. There were also lamps used but they were a far cry from
the bedside lamps that are used today. These lamps were fueled
by animal fat and held a wick. Later other fuels were discovered
and the lamps were encased by glass.
This helped magnify the light given off
by the flame. The next step in evolution for light came in the
form of incandescent light bulbs.
