Modular Homes Save On Housing Costs
By James R Blunt
Modular homes have been given a bad reputation due to their inability
to withstand winds during a major storm. However, these homes
were originally made in order to give millions of individuals
the opportunity to own a home, as well as to experience the joy
of homeownership.
Thanks to these innovative factory built homes, many people have
indeed enjoyed owning their own dwelling, which otherwise may
not have been an option. If one really wants to understand the
modular home industry, then the first step is to know from where
they originated.
A Modular Home From A Sears And Buck Catalog
Modular homes became the hot thing to have in the early twentieth
century. During this time, people could order a modular home from
the Sears and Roebuck catalog, for a simple dollar down. The home
would then be shipped via the railroad.
What may be difficult for one to imagine in today’s high tech
world, is that the home came in many pieces and it was left to
the purchaser to put all of the pieces together! Instructions
were provided of course, but some of these factory built homes
had over thirty thousand pieces. The modular home builder has
definitely come a long way since then. Now, the everyday average
joe doesn’t have to know how to put it together on his own.
Modular Homes For Soldiers Returning After World War II
Another time that manufactured and modular homes became very
popular was after World War II. During this time, soldiers began
to come home and they were looking for new homes, in which to
start a family. The demand was so great that the housing market
could not keep up.
This is one reason that the modular home market began to explode
and evolved tremendously. These homes offered low cost and an
efficiency that was rarely seen with the mobile type homes on
the market. Even now, some homes that were built during this time
are still being used.
A New House Without The Great Expense
Modular homes have long provided a way for many to enjoy having
a new house, without the huge expense. For years, these homes
have been given a bad rap because they were confused with mobile
homes.
However, the modular home of today is a prefabricated structure,
complete with a foundation, and they are usually much more like
a traditional site built home rather than mobile manufactured
homes.
With the way the economy of the world is going, these types of
homes will more than likely be around for years to come as the
demand for new homes continues to rise.

Little Known Modular Homes Facts....
How are modular homes made?
Modular homes are made in a factory.
Each section of the home is constructed a piece at a time
and then thoroughly inspected to ensure they are completely
up to building codes. The materials used are always high
quality and are very durable. All in all, a modular home
is very much like a traditionally built home.
It is hard to imagine but the first modular homes were offered
in a Sears and Roebuck catalog. These "kit" homes ranged
in price from $695 to $4115 and were delivered by railcar. You
had to assemble the home yourself. Sears stopped carrying the
kit homes after the Great Depression and you no longer have to
assemble the house yourself.
