Organic Vegetable Gardening For Your Fresh Fruit And Vegetables
By Pixie Matthews
Organic vegetable gardening is becoming rather popular, especially
as people want to eat freshly picked produce, rather than the
tasteless fruit you get from the grocery store. You may not realize
all the delicious flavor of fruit and vegetables, until you have
tried freshly picked fruit from your garden.
If you want to avoid chemical pesticides and herbicides, then
organic vegetable gardening may be your solution. If all these
chemicals kill weeds and insects, then you can imagine what they
do to your overall state of health if you eat fruit and vegetables
from plants treated with chemicals.
Becoming More Knowledgeable About Chemicals In The Garden
As the awareness of environmental issues grows so does the interest
in organic vegetable gardening. We are becoming more knowledgeable
about how we impact the earth with the use of chemical pesticides
and fertilizers and the fact that these chemicals may remain in
the produce we eat.
Organic vegetables are simply the better choice and organic vegetable
gardening can be the answer to avoiding the higher prices of those
rather anemic vegetables you see in the super market.
Needs A Good Location With Lots Of Sun And No Trees
Good organic vegetable gardening starts with a good location that
provides lots of sun with no trees to shade the garden or tree
roots to rob your plants of nutrients. Your garden will also need
a spot that is well drained and doesn’t sit in water after a hard
rain. Once you have chosen the location for your garden the next
step is to make sure you have good soil. This means adding lots
of composed material.

You can easily make your own compost from organic kitchen waste
and lawn clippings. One of the best additions to any garden is
well composted animal manure and if you know a farmer or a horse
rancher, it’s very likely that they will give you all you need
to build a nutrient rich organic vegetable garden.
Safe Pest Control
Pest control can be one of the most challenging aspects of organic
vegetable gardening but you want to use practices that are safe
for the plants, as well as humans and animals. Healthy plants
are less likely to develop insect infestations so always plant
disease and insect resistant varieties.
Mulch plants to help keep the garden free of weeds that might
harbor insects and use marigolds as companion plants as they repel
insects. If you should find an occasional insect, it is best to
simply pick it off and dispose of it.
Require A Lot Of Water To Produce Fruit
Vegetable gardens require a lot of water to produce fruit. Water
early in the day so plants are not wet at night. This can cause
mold and fungus. Conserve water by watering where it is needed,
at the base of the plants and stay out of the garden when plants
are wet to help prevent spreading disease.
Not only is organic vegetable gardening the best way to ensure
chemical free vegetables for your family but it is an enjoyable
and inexpensive pastime as well and what better pastime than to
help improve the heath of the planet we live on.
Taste The Natural Flavour
When you produce your own fruit and vegetables, you can actually
taste the natural flavour of freshly picked fruit. Making a sauce
from freshly picked tomatoes is a delicious delight in our family.
Adding some fresh cucumber and peppers to a salad adds to the
overall taste. You may not realise all the taste and flavours
of fresh fruit and vegetables until you use your own freshly picked
produce from your garden.
When you buy produce from the store, you do not know how long
the fruit has been in storage, time taken to transport to the
store and how long it has been sitting on the shelf. When you
pick your own fruit or vegetables from your organic vegetable
garden, you know they are fresh and full of natural flavour.

Little Known Gardening Facts....
How do organic foods affect the land?
Since organic farmers do not use the conventional
pesticides to rid their crops of blight, or in the case of animal
farmers not using antibiotics or growth hormones, larger plots of
land must be used. They must plant more crops to account for the
loss from disease or insects.
Do organic foods contain pesticides?
Organic foods do not contain any man-made
pesticides. There are some growers who use natural chemicals found
in plants and insects to protect their crops.
