Oriental Carpets To Decorate Your Home
By Joel F Mornigstar
Nearly everyone loves the look of beautiful oriental carpets.
They have a style and elegance to them that is all their own.
For many people, the price of such antique rugs keeps them from
getting one, but for those lucky enough to be able to afford one,
an oriental area rug is a beautiful addition to any home. Once
an oriental rug is purchased, however, what are the steps that
need to be taken to keep it in good condition?
Oriental carpets come in many different varieties and sizes.
Some of these styles can include: silk rugs, antique rugs, Turkish
rugs, Persian rugs, tribal rugs, Soomak rugs, and may others.
Each of these carpets has their own unique style. Simple steps
can be taken to preserve the beauty of these custom carpets so
that they will last a very long time.
Proper Care Of Oriental Carpets
The first step in proper care is to keep foreign substances and
objects away from the rugs. A floor plan that avoids the traffic
of pets and shoes is the best plan. Also, keep food away from
any carpeting. Heavy objects sitting on a carpet, especially an
antique rug, can ruin the appearance. Therefore, keep heavy objects
off the carpets, and also keep high heels and wheeled objects
away as well.
The best way to ensure that your carpet stays in top condition
is to wait until it is truly dirty before trying to clean it.
For high traffic areas, this can be once a year, yet for less
used places, it can be several years before a carpet is truly
dirty.
How To Determine If Your Rug Is Dirty
First of all, how do you tell if your rug is dirty? The best
way to tell is to pick up a corner and beat it with your hand.
If more than a little dust flies out, then it probably needs to
be cleaned. Another way to tell is to rub your hand against the
carpet for several seconds.
If you hand feels dirty afterwards, then your area rug needs
to be cleaned. So when you do get ready to clean your oriental
carpet, how should it be done? There are several carpet treatment
methods that can be used, from having a professional clean your
rug, to sending it out to be cleaned, to cleaning it yourself.
If you are worried about ruining the rug if you clean it yourself,
then it is probably best to let a professional handle it.
Cleaning Oriental Carpets Yourself
However, it can be rather simple to clean it yourself. To clean
an area rug yourself, all you have to do is follow a few simple
steps. First vacuum the rug really well on both sides. Then take
a mild detergent solution and a soft brush. Softly brush the solution
into the rug in the direction of the nap.
Try to use as little of the solution as possible, or else the
rug will take forever to dry. Then rinse the rug with clear water,
squeeze out the excess water and hang the rug to dry in the sun.
So that is how to clean oriental carpets. For larger rugs, a
professional cleaner is the best way to go. But for smaller carpets
and rugs, it can be done at home. Follow these instructions and
you will be fine. Have fun with your carpets!

Little Known Home Decorating Facts....
How long has carpet been around?
It may be hard to believe but carpets have
been around since the 2nd and 3rd millennium BC! The earliest
carpet that has survived the test of time is called the "Pazyryk
Carpet" and was found in Siberia in 1949. It dates back to the
5th and 4th century BC.
No one is quite sure who made the carpet
but there is speculation that either the Iranians or the Persians
created this masterpiece of woven fabrics. Knotted pile carpets
can be traced back to the 13th century but the best examples of
carpets come to us from the Turks who have perfected the art of
tapestries and carpets.
Each of the different types of fibers has
a certain characteristic that makes them desirable to different
customers. Some want durability whereas others are more concerned
that the carpet is made from natural fibers which will cost more.
The carpet fiber that you pick will be
determined by how heavily it will be used. High traffic areas
do much better with synthetic fibers and can actually reduce the
amount of dust allergens. If cost is a major factor then you most
definitely want to go with a synthetic blend versus a natural
fiber.
Most carpets today are made with synthetic
fibers and are done with a machine. But you can still find hand-made
carpets made of natural fibers. You can expect to pay more for
the natural fiber carpets that are hand made and stitched or woven
on a loom.
Rugs, lamps, pictures and throws can be overwhelming to someone
without decorating experience. Items that look great in pictures
seem to not go well with your furniture or vice versa. It takes
a bit of knowledge and creativity to bring together different
elements into one cohesive, beautiful design.
