Parrot Pets Integrating With Your Family

By Rodger G Allenby

You may not think that the way parrot pets were raised would have as much effect as it does on how it might integrate into your own family.

But being raised by human hands almost from birth, as opposed to being raised by its own parents, can make all the difference in whether or not it can be tamed enough to be a good pet. This is just one of the things you’ll need to know, in order to review your options and give proper pet care to your parrot, if indeed you do decide to get one.

Choosing A Parrot To Suit Your Family

To begin with, since most parrots are quite vocal and sensitive to the atmosphere around them, take a critical look at your own household. If your family is a bit loud and raucous, then it may affect the high strung bird so that it, too, is constantly squawking and raising a fuss.

But on the other hand, if you live in a household where peace and quiet is cherished and people rarely speak above a murmur, then choosing a pet bird from a very talkative, active parrot species that requires a lot of stimulation and attention is not a wise course.

Younger Parrots Integrate Better With Humans

Younger parrot pets often sell for a higher price than those that are even just a few months older. This is because the youngest parrots, if they’ve been raised by human hands, are still able to be socialized to integrate well with humans.

A parrot that is not raised by hand, and gets to be six months or older, has almost passed the point where it can be completely tamed. Despite their long age spans, parrots have pretty much established their adult personality by the time they’re a year old, and bird training or easy integration into a household is likely to be much more difficult.

Carefully Research The Breed Before Making A Final Purchase Decision

The younger that people can acquire parrot pets, the more successfully they can be assimilated into the household. But the family itself also has to be prepared to deal with these types of pet birds, since they require a lot of extra care and attention.

Research the particular breed of parrot you’re considering before buying the bird, as this will give you a lot of information about how to take care of it correctly. Knowing its level of socialization and what sort of intelligence and personality it has, will help you bring it into your home and make it an important member of your family.
