Riding Lawn Mower Garden Nursery Landscaping Guide
Riding Lawn Mower For A Big Backyard
By Joel F Mornigstar
If a riding lawnmower has become a necessity for you, whether
it is because you have moved and have a larger yard, if your health
is such that you are no longer able to push a mower or even if
you are just tired of having to cut it, then it is a good idea
to check out more than one riding lawn mower make and model.
There are other things that you may want to consider before you
make the actual purchase, as more information is always useful
when making this type of decision. Naturally, you should know
the actual size of your yard, which can help you determine what
size lawnmower engine you will need and what cutting width is
needed for the lawn mower blades.
A Minimum Of 14.5 Horsepower
As a general rule, if the area you need to mow is from one half
to one acre in size, then you should consider an engine that has
a minimum of 14.5 horsepower and a maximum cutting width of 42
inches. If you have a yard that is one to two acres in size, then
the cutting width should generally be from 42 to 46 inches and
the engine between 14.5 and 16 horsepower.
For a yard of more than three acres it is generally considered
best to purchase a garden tractor with a cutting width of 46 to
54 inches and between 18 and 24 horsepower. A garden tractor and
riding lawn mower both do the basic function of mowing the lawn.
Substitute With Other Lawn And Garden Tools
However, the garden tractor can be used to substitute for a variety
of lawn and garden tools. You can pull a plow, tiller or disc
harrow with it and you can also use it with a snow plow or blower.
Once you have taken care of the bigger decisions, the smaller
ones are a little easier. You will need to choose whether you
would prefer a gear driven or automatic riding mower. This is
normally based on the number of obstacles, such as trees, patios
or gardens that are in your yard.
An automatic mower is great for yards that have a great deal
of obstacles, while a gear driven one is perfect for a yard with
less obstacles. You can then decide what type of accessories or
attachments you want.
Follow Safety Precautions To Avoid Accidents
In order to avoid injury be sure that you understand the safety
precautions fully and that you always follow them. Avoid allowing
children to ride on mowers or to operate the mower, as it is very
easy for them to fall off, which may result in a serious or fatal
accident. Do not run the riding mowers around people if possible,
as you may run over something that can be flung out and cause
injury to anyone in the area.
Try to be sure that all potentially hazardous or dangerous debris,
such as pine cones, rocks, toys or other tools are cleared from
the lawn before you start mowing. Choosing the right riding lawn
mower, such as one of the Toro lawn mowers, and following all
safety precautions will help ensure that you will enjoy the mower
for years to come.

Little Known Lawn Mower Facts....
When was the first lawn mowers invented?
The task of cutting grass was made easier
in 1827 with the invention of the lawn mower by Edwin Beard budding.
Prior to his invention people would cut grass and plants with
a very sharp scythe. The scythe had many disadvantages. It was
extremely sharp and resulted in many injuries over the years.
It also required quite a lot of physical
exertion in order to swing the blade. Budding’s invention came
about after he observed a machine in a factory. The machine in
the factory was cutting nap from fabric. That first mower was
a reel mower. In order to cut the grass a person would have to
push the handle. It was not the easiest way to cut grass but it
was certainly a step in the right direction.
It was not until ten years later that a
lawn cutting machine would be developed that could be pulled by
horses or donkeys. And a full sixty years after that would be
the first steam-powered lawn mower. The rotary mowers that people
see today would not be invented until there was a way to develop
small enough engines that could power the blades at high speed.
The whole process of developing the lawn mower of today has been
in the making for well over a hundred years.
