RV Awnings For Your Motor Home

By Joel F Mornigstar

While gas prices have soared and some people have been forced to cut back on the amount of travel they do in recreational vehicles, there is still a strong contingent of people who enjoy taking road trips and seeing the country, via an RV.

One of the most appreciated and most popular accessories is RV awnings, which add living space and comfort to these rolling homes. Those who have spent a good deal of time on the road in RVs will usually insist on having at least one type of retractable awning on their vehicle to provide convenience and enhanced living.

Retractable Motor Home Awnings

While there are some people who might think that dealing with an awning on an RV is more hassle that it is worth and that there is the potential for just interfering with the enjoyment of your vacation time, those who are experienced RVers would disagree.

In actuality, it doesn't take much time or effort at all these days to extend or retract motorhome awnings, even if it is a manual model that uses a hand crank to deploy it or draw it back in. A retractable awning just requires a touch of a button to extend or retract these practical and useful shade structures.

Automatic Motorized Electric Awning System

With the popularity of the RV awnings, it is common to find that virtually all models of new RVs have these awning systems installed as standard equipment, rather than being optional add-ons. For the most part, you can expect that the high-end, upscale models will have an automatic, motorized electric awning system, while the low-end models will come equipped with awning units that must be adjusted manually.

If you already own an RV and it does not currently have a sun awning, then you can always add one so that you can enjoy the benefits of having this type of sun deflecting canopy attached to your rolling home.

Most of the RV retailers that also provide service will either have a selection of awnings canopies in stock that you can choose from or catalogs that you can use to place a custom order. The RV service centers will also be able to take care of the installation for you so that you can rest assured that it has been done correctly and professionally.

Integrated Lighting Into The Awning System

There are some models of awnings that have lighting integrated right into the awning system itself. For some people, this lighting helps to make the entire RV awning system something that creates a true ultimate setting for both comfort and enjoyment when stopping for the evening.

The awning in and of itself provides protection from the bright and harsh sun that is usually abundant where RVers love to travel, and with this lighting feature you can enjoy the outside room of the RV from morning, all the way into the evening.

Awnings Keep The Heat Out Of The Motor Home

On top of expanding the living space that travelers have to use for relaxing or entertaining, motorhome awnings are also very helpful in keeping heat from building up within the recreational vehicle.

As the RV awnings cast shade over large sections of the RV, the interior can stay cooler meaning that the air conditioning unit does not have to work as hard to keep the interior space comfortable for cooking tasks or for sleep time.

Little Known Awnings Facts....

How much do awnings cost?
The cost of your awning will depend on two factors: size and whether or not it is motorized. A basic awning from Sam's Club starts off at $642.00 for a manual 10 foot awning. The price continues to rise from there depending on size and whether or not it is motorized.

The most expensive awning Sam's Club offers is the Beauty Mark by Maui that is 12 feet and is motorized. This awning costs $2,020.00. There are other manufacturers that produce different size awnings and their price, will of course, vary depending on size and motorization.
