Seed Germination Gardening Nursery Landscaping Guide
Seed Germination And Monitoring Plant Growth
By Suzzie T Franklin
You may have a garden and you make the effort to prepare the
soil, plant your seeds and after a period of time, watch little
seedlings come out of the soil. Now, you wonder about the seed
germination process and what happens after you place your seeds
in the soil.
Understanding about how plants germinate, will help you become
a better gardener. Once you know why you are making the effort
to prepare the soil, water the soil once the seeds are in the
soil, then it will be easier to understand the consequences of
not following the correct steps.
Baby Steps To Plant Growth
The seed germination process, is like following the growth of
a baby plant where the seed collects nutrients. Then young roots
appear underneath the soil.
The skin divides, the seed splits, the shoot straightens and
heads up. After a period of time, the main root gets bigger and
starts to grow side roots. This is about the time when the first
leaves begin to appear.
Caring For The Soil To Ensure The Growth Of The Seedling
When fruit and flower plants germinate, cotyledons store food
for the small plant growing on the interior of the seed. This
is an important time, where you need to review your options and
care for the soil for proper seedling growth.
This means the soil must be kept moist, warm, and dark, so the
cotyledons can do their job. If the seed is dry, it will remain
dormant until it is soaked in a little water for the seed to begin
to germinate.
Growing The Seedlings In Ideal Conditions
Understanding the process of germination, allows you to plan
and prepare ideal conditions for seeds to germinate. One example
is placing your seeds inside your home or in a garden shed, away
from the cold and freezing conditions outside.
This way you can watch the seedlings grow and take care of them
by monitoring their progress in ideal growth conditions.
Growing herbs in your kitchen is one way to watch plants grow
step by step, including watch them sprout and grow. After a while,
you will know the herbs that need rich soil, in order to grow
fresh herbs for your cooking.
Children Fascinated By The Plant Growing Process
Your children may be fascinated by the germination process, watching
you grow flowers and small fruit. Children can see you placing
the seeds, watch the stems grow, witness the new leaves opening
and the colours of the blossoming flowers.
You should place your growing plants near a window, to get enough
sunlight each day and water them at least once a day, to be rewarded
with healthy plants and healthy green leaves. If you do not have
adequate sunlight reaching the plant, you could purchase a couple
of grow lights and place them near the plants, as grow lights
simulate sunlight.
To get more information you can purchase gardening books, and
watch garden videos on You Tube, to give you a visual understanding
of seed germination.
