Stained Glass Mosaic To Display Art In Your Home
By Joel F Mornigstar
A mosaic is a medley made up of tiles or broken pieces of glass
or pottery and then attached to a surface with adhesive and grout.
Mosaics are commonly used on picture frames, mirrors, kitchen
back splashes and bathroom floors.
Aside from being a home decor finish, a stained glass mosaic
is also widely viewed as a stand-alone work of art. When completed,
the finished results are akin to a painting you would display
on your wall.
Small Glass Tiles Create An Intricate Pattern
The first step when making a mosaic is to decide on a pattern
for your project and then gather your mosaic supplies. Stained
glass mosaics are made with small glass tiles to create an intricate
pattern.
Your supplies should include a mosaic glass cutter for any shaping
and cutting you might need to do. Although you can cut the stained
glass tiles yourself, with the availability of small pre-cut pieces
you no longer need to do so, which can save quite a bit of time.
A Mosaic For Indoor Or Outdoor Display
For backing materials, wood and plexiglass are fine for indoor
projects, but if you are making pieces that will be outdoors,
such as garden mosaics, then a concrete backer board is best.
It does not decay from exposure to the elements, like wood will
do. Next, draw your mosaic pattern on the backing material and
then arrange each stained glass tile onto your pattern. Then glue
the glass onto the backing, one piece at a time.
Be sure to use mosaic glass glue for your indoor projects. Leave
around 1/8 inch between each tile and allow the glue to dry for
at least twenty four hours before you grout your project. Once
the grout dries, place what is known as a zinc frame around the
outer edge. A zinc frame is a bar that holds the pieces of tile
and glass together. Now it is time to solder the frame together
at the seams.
Concrete Thin-Set For Outdoor Projects
A stained glass mosaic has many useful applications. They may
be used as glass tile back splashes in the kitchen, on the wall
in a bathroom or as a decorative piece in a window. Stained glass
garden mosaics make a perfect addition to birdbaths and fountains,
but make sure you use concrete thin-set instead of glue for any
outdoor projects that will be exposed to the elements. Concrete
thin-set is also best used for mosaics that combine materials
that are not of the same thickness.
A stained glass mosaic can be a kaleidoscope of colors and textures.
The next time you drop a dish or a glass and it breaks, save the
pieces for your mosaic projects. The beauty of mosaics is that
the patterns and designs can be random. You may just amaze yourself
at how creative you can get making mosaics of your own. Not only
are they fun, they add a creative and artistic touch to any space.

Little Known Mosaic Facts....
What are mosaics?
A mosaic is a form of art that is created
by taking smaller pieces of glass, stone, or any material and
creating an image out of the smaller pieces. A mosaic can be
used as a decoration for a cathedral, a home countertop or
simply a piece of art hanging on the wall.
