Stained Glass Is Stirring Decorative Art
By Joel F Morningstar
Creating stained glass pieces is a great way, for those who know
how, to express creativity. This beautiful art form has been used
for years to create everything from majestic temple stained leaded
glass windows to glass lamps used in the home.
Understanding this glass art can help one to better understand
how to review their options and enhance their everyday lives.
The history is one that is unique and truly graceful in the way
that it came to be.
Colored Glass In Gothic Cathedrals
The beginning of the history of stained glass is a foggy one.
Most likely the first colored glass was used in jewelry, cloisonné
and mosaics. The most well known use has been in the churches
across Europe.
The Gothic cathedrals of the 1100s saw a mosaic form emerge to
beautify the windows. One monk commissioned many to be made into
mosaic pieces because he fully believed that the beautiful glass
would uplift men’s spirits and make them feel closer to God.
Expressing Passages From The Bible
Another thing that art glass was used for was to visually express
passages from the Bible. Many people of ancient times could not
read, so therefore the only way that they could understand the
biblical word was through the use of pictures in the church or
the spoken word of the priest. The beautiful leaded glass windows
played a tremendous role in helping many learn Christianity.
One of the main points of history that is unique to the art of
stained glass is what happened during the Renaissance. The Renaissance
is known as a time when various art forms flourished, but the
delicate process of working with glass was lost during this flourishing
time.
For those who did create glass art, they quickly became glass
painters and the art of staining glass was lost for almost three
hundred years. When this art was rediscovered, both John LaFarge
and Louis Comfort Tiffany began to revise the unique techniques,
and the rest, as they say, is history.
The Beauty Of Colors On Glass
Stained glass is a technique that artists still study in today’s
universities. The unique form of art that helped men become closer
to God is still doing the same thing in today’s society. Beauty
can take many forms, but works of colored glass is one form of
beauty, about which almost all can agree.
Throughout history, colored glass has communicated sacred information
while stirring hearts of men through the beauty of various colors.
The span of time has not changed the beauty that it conveys.

Little Known Stained Glass Facts....
How do I preserve my stained glass?
Caring for and preserving stained glass is
a consuming effort. Stained glass is very delicate and unlike
traditional glass, its subjection to the elements can prove disastrous.
Your stained glass piece must be inspected fairly regularly for
any cracks, pitting or weakening of the frame.
If you observe any, you must contact a
professional as soon as possible. He or she will come to view
the piece and give you their professional opinion on how to restore
the piece to its former glory.
Simple routine cleaning should always be
performed but never with a wet cloth or harsh chemical cleaner.
Simply take a soft bristled brush and gently run it over the surface.
It is that simple.
