Tankless Water Heater Helps To Reduce Energy Costs
By Rodger G Allenby
In these days of energy efficiency, the tankless water heater
is looking better and better. A traditional tank heater keeps
hot water always at the ready, but despite good insulation, it
needs to keep heating the water to prevent it from cooling down.
The continuous heating, even when you’re not using the water,
costs you money. This heat is energy that is simply lost because
it is constantly dissipating during the hours when the water isn’t
being used. But the tankless heater, also known as an on demand
water heater, uses energy to create hot water only when you need
it.
Find Out The Type Of Water Heater You Need For Your Home
What happens with a tankless heater is that water comes into
your home via your normal pipes, but passes through the heater
assembly just before it comes out of the tap. Different sized
or located heaters would work for different needs, so you’d
need to review your options and decide which type of heater you
should get.
For example, if you only need one area heated, like the bathroom,
then you would likely install water heater equipment on the wall
near the sink or the shower. For larger needs, other units could
be installed in other rooms, or you could get a whole-house unit.
Seek Professional Advice To Ensure You Purchase The Right Water Heater
But before you choose a tankless water heater, you need to do
some calculations. If you’re planning to heat water in more than
one room, then you would either need a heater in each room, or
have a large one that could handle the maximum flow you’re likely
to experience in the house.
The type of heating you’ll use will involve other calculations.
For electric heaters you’ll need to consult with an electrician
to be sure the demands of the heaters can be supported, and for
a gas water heater you’ll need to know what your current gas line
can handle and what is required, and that you have proper venting.
Saving Energy With A Tankless Heater
Nothing that heats water is going to be entirely energy neutral.
Even a tankless water heater needs sensors to be turned on so
it can tell when the heat needs to be ramped up.
But this type of home water heater is still a considerable energy
saver, because the electrical energy used to run a sensor is a
great deal less than the amount of energy required for constant
heating.
If you want to take your home in an energy efficient direction,
a tankless heater may be the way to go.
