The Red Carpet Garden Nursery Landscaping Guide

The Red Carpet For Important People

By Joel F Mornigstar

Most people think of celebrities "walking" the red carpet at movie premiers. While that is true today, it wasn’t always the case for this type of rug. They used to be more functional and the process that took red carpets from being functional to fashionable is long and interesting.

The idea of putting a carpet out for important people to walk on probably started in medieval times. Because the roads were virtually non-existent, large puddles and pot holes were always present in the path of visiting dignitaries and royalty.

The Red Carpet Was Laid Out To Stop Important People Walking On Mud

A carpet would be put down on the ground so that these important people would not have to drag their expensive clothing through the mud, or worse materials, which might be in the streets. This is basically the same idea as someone putting their coat down for a princess to walk on.

These practices carried on until the roads were substantial enough to negate the need for such practices. However, with the invention of the passenger railroad, came the resurgence of the idea of placing a carpet for passengers riding the trains.

Red Carpet For Directing Customers

The New York Central Railroad used to place a red carpet on the floor to direct passengers to their right compartments. It is believed that this was the start of placing a red carpet for important and famous people.

Now, the practice of "rolling out the red carpet" has come to mean several different things, besides using them for celebrities, royalty and other important people. This expression has come to mean any kind of treatment that is out of the ordinary. "Red carpet treatment" is what many different businesses claim to offer to their customers.

The Red Carpet For Marketing Products And Services

It is a marketing ploy that many businesses use to increase the perceived value of their products. Of course, because red colored carpets have come to be seen as expensive, many businesses that are trying to portray a rich appearance will put them on their floors. This makes them seem like they are luxurious businesses and so they can sometimes charge more for their products and services than a business that does not have that perceived expensive value.

However, often times, a red carpet is looked down on more often than not, unless it is being used in an official "red carpet ceremony." But in special circumstances, these marketing plans work well.

So now you know how the red carpet came to be. It started with the beginning of the road, and has been around ever since. Now the idea of red carpets have dwindled to cheap marketing ploys, except when one is rolled out for VIPs.

When used in this way, it is still a big deal. Learning about the story of the "red carpet" and how it has changed over the years is interesting.

Little Known Home Decorating Facts....

What are the different types of carpet?
This is a tricky question because it can be taken two ways. The first is the types of fibers that make up the carpet and the second is the actual types of carpets themselves. Let’s go with the second since the type of carpet fibers has already been covered.

There are several different types of carpets and it may surprise you to learn that not all carpets were originally created to be walked upon. It was not until the 18th century that carpets were used as floor coverings. Some of the different types of carpets are: woven, needlefelt, flatweave, hooked and knotted pile carpets. Each one is created using a different method.

Most carpets today are made with synthetic fibers and are done with a machine. But you can still find hand-made carpets made of natural fibers. You can expect to pay more for the natural fiber carpets that are hand made and stitched or woven on a loom.

Rugs, lamps, pictures and throws can be overwhelming to someone without decorating experience. Items that look great in pictures seem to not go well with your furniture or vice versa. It takes a bit of knowledge and creativity to bring together different elements into one cohesive, beautiful design.
