Little Known Stained Glass Facts....
What types of stained glass are there?
There are four primary types of stained glass:
cylinder, crown, table and flashed. Cylinder glass is blown into
a cylinder shaped piece before it is cut open and spread. This
form of stained glass was primarily used in the past for the stained
glass windows.
Crown is blown partially before being spun
on a potter’s wheel. It is then spread out and cut into the desired
pieces. This form is used in small window insets. Table glass
is the process of pouring hot glass onto a cold table and then
rolling it.
The glass takes on different characteristics
due to its contact with the cold metal. Table glass is now the
preferred method for producing the glass for cathedral windows.
Flashed glass is the process of dipping the molten glass into
a red dye.
It is then mixed until the desired shade
is achieved. This method of creating stained glass was used heavily
in the medieval period for the rich reds it produced.
