Turkish Carpets With Warm Rich Colors
By Joel F Mornigstar
Turkish carpets are highly sought after throughout the world.
The beauty and artistry involved in making these rugs, along with
their warm, rich colors, are much-enjoyed characteristics of the
rugs.
Highly versatile, they can be used as flooring coverings or wall
hangings, depending entirely on how they are made and the materials
used. Because they are prized, they can be quite expensive and
there are many forgeries on the market. As a result, anyone who
is considering purchasing one needs to learn more about them first.
Carpets Made In Turkey
Traditionally, carpets make in Turkey are made by women and girls
using wool pile, warps and wefts, as well as natural dyes. Of
course, the traditional method of making these carpets is not
always the most convenient or cost-effective.
Some variations include weaving with wool pile on cotton warps
and wefts, as well as using silk pile, warp and wefts. Chemical
dyes and machine weaving have also become common production methods
for custom carpets that are meant to be sold.
Recognizing The Differences In Turkish Carpets
One way to make sure that you are getting a quality floor covering
and what you are paying for is to be able to recognize the differences
in Turkish carpets. Silk on silk carpets have a high knot count,
and the patterns are usually quite intricate on the carpet.
Wool on cotton, on the other hand, has a lower knot count than
silk and, while the patterns are somewhat intricate, they are
less intricate than the silk. Wool on wool has the lowest knot
count of the three, and patterns are usually basic and made of
geometric shapes.
In addition to determining the materials, look at the back of
the rug to determine whether it was hand-spun. If the squares
are all the same size on the carpet, then it is machine-spun.
Finally, wipe the rug with a damp white cloth to see if the dyes
used are natural or chemical. Chemical dyes will bleed off onto
the cloth, which means they will also bleed when the rug is washed.
Turkish Carpets Are Used As Floor Coverings And Floor Mats
Weavers of Turkish carpets make them to sell, but they are also
used by the weavers as floor coverings, wall hangings, floor mats,
and even protective covers during severe changes in temperature.
Since they are not all made to sell, and they are only made in
a few areas within Turkey, the rugs can be difficult to find.
Although hand weaving has declined because of the increase in
machine weaving, the rugs are still made with the kind of quality
that allows them to become family heirlooms.
Before buying, however, it is important to know enough about
the custom carpets to be certain of what you’re being sold.

Little Known Home Decorating Facts....
What is moquette?
Moquette in today’s terminology is used to
describe and define wall-to-wall carpeting. But this has only
occurred since the latter part of the 19th century. Previously
moquette was the term used to describe a technique of creating
a carpet on a drawn loom.
The carpet was created on a mechanized
loom. The warp-cut or uncut loop fibers were formed under the
weft without creating a knot. Unfortunately this technique is
limited in the amount of colored fibers it can contain. It can
only have five colors used.
Most carpets today are made with synthetic
fibers and are done with a machine. But you can still find hand-made
carpets made of natural fibers. You can expect to pay more for
the natural fiber carpets that are hand made and stitched or woven
on a loom.
Rugs, lamps, pictures and throws can be overwhelming to someone
without decorating experience. Items that look great in pictures
seem to not go well with your furniture or vice versa. It takes
a bit of knowledge and creativity to bring together different
elements into one cohesive, beautiful design.
