Wall Sconces Lighting Up Your Hallway

By Joel F Morningstar

Wall sconces are a beautiful and functional decor element that is rapidly gaining in popularity. In addition to being a creative design element, sconces are functional and are an excellent source of light for a wide variety of needs.

As an added bonus, the wall mounts erase the need for space consuming floor and table lamps. If you love the soft, elegant glow of chandelier lighting but want a more modern look, then sconces are the way to go. Whether you need bright task lighting or a mood enhancing glow, sconces are always a good choice.

Styles To Suit Any Decor

Wall sconces have been used for centuries but nowadays you can find styles to suit any decor. You can also choose from many types, including candle, electric bulb and electric candle sconces. All provide a soft glow that creates a warm environment.

Once you have decided which style suits you, you have to review your options and consider placement. These lighting fixtures are usually wall mounted just about the midpoint of a wall. You can go higher or lower, but remember that a poorly placed wall sconce is glaringly noticeable and may not achieve the desired lighting effect. You want a light that will be soft, so place it at a level that won’t glare in your eyes.

Mounting Hardware Included

The electrical needs for sconces are specific, so make sure you have the correct wiring in place before purchasing the pieces. These wall fixtures come with mounting hardware to install your new light. The mounting bracket is secured to the wall, then the electrical box is secured with two screws provided.

It is powered by an electrical wire via a switch containing a hot, neutral and ground. Once wired, a center stud is screwed into the bracket that the light fixture is attached to with a locking nut. If you are not familiar with handling electricity, then it’s a good idea to hire a professional electrician who can do the job safely.

Improve The Atmosphere Of The Room

If you are using sconces to accent a point of interest, like an interesting table, then make sure the effect is a soft glow that is not overpowering. You should also consider the layout of your furniture. Sconces should add to the atmosphere and experience of your room, not detract from it.

Do not place sconces directly where someone will be sitting. A better choice is to place the fixtures off to the side. If you’re using sconces to light a hallway, which is a very popular choice that can make this space look spectacular, then make sure that your sconce layout is balanced. You can do this by placing the wall fixtures 8 to 10 feet apart in a staggered pattern for the length of your hallway. The effect will be stunning.

A More Contemporary Look

Sconces are a great way to combine style and functionality in your home. They are as classy and attractive as a crystal chandelier but will give your home a more contemporary look. As a bonus, they add security by brightening stairways and hallways.

Wall sconces are available in materials that vary from metal to frosted or stained glass, so you’re sure to find a design to suit your personal style. When placing your fixtures, consider light direction, diffusion and practicality. Well placed lighting can create a beautiful residential setting in which to relax.

Little Known Home Lighting Facts....

What types of lighting should I be looking at for my home?
The type of light you need for your home all depends on what style you prefer. Many people find that a combination of overhead lights and lamps works best for their homes. Generally the overhead lights are used when the entire room needs to be illuminated and the smaller lamps are used when a person needs a light to illuminate up close. You can also use track lighting to highlight architectural designs or artwork.

Most homeowners do not use florescent lights. This lighting is often very harsh and does not look as nice as softer lights do. It really all depends on what you want. You can mix a wide variety of lighting types to achieve an overall effect that can be used day or night. You can also change how your lights look by changing the wattage of your bulbs.
