Window Awnings Protect Against UV Radiation
By Joel F Morningstar
In general, people love to dress up their interior windows with
everything from rich and flowing draperies, to decorative curtains,
to sensible blinds. These window treatments are practical and
provide privacy and protection from the sun, while adding to the
decor sense of any room.
However, it seems that most people completely forget about the
need to improve the look of their exterior windows. It is easy
to review your options and add window awnings to your home, to
give it a more completed look from the outside; adding both beauty
and value.
Metal And Canvas Window Awnings
Metal or canvas awnings can be a terrific way to add some beauty,
interest, and aesthetic value to the exterior of your home, while
giving it better curb appeal and making it more welcoming to your
guests.
In a sense, decorative home awnings for the windows and doors
are like outdoor window treatments that can highlight and protect
entry ways into your home and accentuate and shield the exterior
windows.
Window Awnings Are Better Than Shutters
For many people, window awnings are a better solution than shutters
because, with awnings, you don't have to deal with cumbersome
shutters that can also interfere with the view outside the window.
These special sun awning units for windows can provide the needed
shade, yet will not hinder any sights or scenery.
You can also coordinate the awnings canopies that are installed
outdoors to match the patio awning and other patio accessories
that you might be using to decorate and embellish an outdoor living
space that is protected by canopy shade structures.
Enjoy The Open Air Lifestyle
These types of patio awnings are becoming more and more popular
because they allow people to extend their useable living space
considerably and enjoy the open air lifestyle, which will permit
families and their guests to simply move from an inside area to
an outside area as if it were one large space.
In addition to coordinating with the look and feel of the additional
space created by a patio awning, an exterior window awning is
also important in terms of protecting your home and the precious
possessions inside of it. As the sun beats down upon windows and
doors, it warms up the house significantly.
Protection Against UV Radiation
Even if there are interior window coverings, the heat can still
seep through as well as some degree of UV radiation. The UV light
can destroy many types of materials as well, causing carpets and
upholstery to fade. The shade that is created by these home awnings
adds another barrier and layer of protection from the sun.
This means that using outdoor awnings on your windows can help
to make furniture last longer and they can also help to reduce
energy costs and cut utility bills. The shade from a large window
awning can lower the indoor temperature by as much as 15 degrees,
making the interior more comfortable for everyone.
Tiny Holes And Slits For Air Circulation
A good quality sun awning will also be vented with tiny holes
or slits in the canvas material, which will allow air to circulate
so that heated air is not trapped in doorways and around windows.
You will be able to select from a wide array of window awnings
that are available at home improvement stores and from specialty
suppliers. In most instances, the exterior window awning units
that are installed over the windows are not adjustable.
But, there are retractable awnings that are used to protect and
enhance larger spaces, such as for patios and decks, which will
allow you to extend the awning to various settings as desired.

Little Known Awnings Facts....
Can I make different awnings myself?
Yes, you can make your awning yourself but
it is going to require some heavy duty tools and a lot of patience.
If you are making an awning from a heavy duty plastic you are
going to need some way to either sew the ends together or fasten
them. You will also need to heavy duty shears to cut the fabric
as ordinary household scissors will fail miserably at this job.
If you are making an awning from wood,
which in actuality will make it more like a roof, you are going
to need a way to cut the wood, nail it or screw it together and
a way to attach it to your existing roof. The next step is to
measure the dimensions of how big you want your awning to be.
You will then have to decide if it is going to continuously stay
in place or will be retractable.
Of course, if you have a wooden awning
it will have to be stationary. The reality of making your own
awning is that it may be cheaper in both time and money in the
long run to simply buy an awning. It will definitely be far less
stressful than stitching or hammering an awning together yourself.
